A new chapter in agricultural development is unfolding in the Brotherson area as the Greenhouse Village Initiative moves from vision to reality. Located just outside of Newton Ground, this transformative project represents a strategic investment in food security, economic growth, and sustainable development for St. Kitts and Nevis.
The initiative, which includes the construction of 24 modern greenhouses, is designed to strengthen local agricultural production while creating opportunities for farmers, agro-processors, women, and youth throughout the Federation.
As part of its ongoing commitment to national development, the Whitegate Development Corporation (WGDC) is proud to have provided the land necessary to facilitate this important project in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and other stakeholders.

The Greenhouse Village Initiative has been carefully designed to support the cultivation of high-demand crops such as sweet peppers, tomatoes, and lettuce. The wider agricultural programme also creates opportunities for the production of cabbage, carrots, broccoli, kale, sweet corn, watermelons, pineapples, herbs, and other vegetables that are essential to local consumption and food security.
By incorporating climate-smart technologies and modern farming techniques, the project will help farmers increase productivity while improving resilience against environmental and market challenges.
In addition to physical infrastructure, participants will benefit from structured training programmes and technical support aimed at improving agricultural practices, strengthening business skills, and promoting innovation within the sector.
Agriculture remains a critical pillar of the Federation’s economy and an important component of the Sustainable Island State Agenda (SISA).
Today, more than 415 farmers contribute to crop production across St. Kitts and Nevis, while over 300 livestock farmers are engaged in the production of goats, sheep, pigs, poultry, and cattle. The Greenhouse Village Initiative seeks to build upon this strong foundation by creating new opportunities for growth and diversification.
The project is expected to encourage greater participation by women and young people in agriculture while supporting a new generation of agricultural entrepreneurs.
Beyond farming, the initiative also creates opportunities for agro-processors, beekeepers, food manufacturers, and small businesses that add value to agricultural products. These value-added activities play an important role in strengthening local supply chains and increasing economic activity throughout rural communities.

One of the primary objectives of the Greenhouse Village Initiative is to reduce the Federation’s dependence on imported food products.
Increasing domestic food production will not only improve food security but also help reduce the national agri-food import bill, keeping more economic value within the local economy.
The initiative supports broader national efforts to build resilience, strengthen self-sufficiency, and create a more sustainable agricultural sector capable of meeting future challenges.
Through increased production, improved technologies, and expanded opportunities for farmers, the project is expected to make a meaningful contribution to the long-term development of St. Kitts and Nevis.
At Whitegate Development Corporation, we believe development extends far beyond housing and infrastructure. Sustainable development requires investment in people, communities, and industries that create long-term social and economic benefits.
Our decision to allocate land for agricultural use reflects our commitment to supporting national priorities and fostering opportunities that improve livelihoods while protecting future generations.
The Greenhouse Village Initiative represents more than an agricultural project—it represents opportunity, innovation, job creation, and a shared vision for a stronger and more self-sufficient nation.
As construction progresses and the Greenhouse Village begins to take shape, the project serves as a powerful example of what can be achieved through collaboration, strategic planning, and a commitment to sustainable growth.
WGDC remains proud to support initiatives that empower local communities, strengthen food systems, and contribute to the continued development of the Whitegate Development Area.
Together, we are cultivating a future rooted in resilience, sustainability, and opportunity.
