Featured Farmer: Aaron Hodge – Cultivating Success Through Dedication and Hard Work

At Whitegate Development Corporation (WGDC), we recognize and celebrate the invaluable contributions of our farmers to the domestic economy. Agriculture remains a critical pillar of national development, and we are proud to support its expansion and diversification in alignment with the Sustainable Island State Agenda (SISA).

In this edition of our Featured Farmer Series, we spotlight Mr. Aaron Hodge, a dedicated farmer from Newton Ground whose passion, perseverance, and commitment to agriculture have earned him recognition throughout St. Kitts and Nevis.

A Lifetime Dedicated to Agriculture

For more than 25 years, Aaron Hodge has devoted himself to farming, building a successful agricultural enterprise through hard work and determination. Today, he cultivates approximately 10 acres of land at Brotherson Estate, producing a diverse range of crops that contribute to local food security and support the community.

His farm is home to bananas, onions, green peppers, pineapples, coconuts, herbs, thyme, root crops, and a variety of other vegetables. Through the use of multiple farming techniques and sustainable practices, Aaron continues to maximize productivity while maintaining the health of his land.

Innovation Meets Agriculture

Aaron’s commitment to innovation is evident throughout his farming operations. Recognizing the importance of sustainability and efficiency, he has incorporated solar energy into his farm, using solar panels to provide power for daily operations and energize his perimeter fencing.

This renewable energy solution helps protect his crops from monkey intrusion while reducing his reliance on traditional energy sources, demonstrating how modern technology can successfully support agricultural development.

From Construction to Cultivation

During our interview, Aaron reflected on how his journey into farming began after leaving the construction industry.

What started as a career change soon became a lifelong passion.

“I love my farming. It makes me feel good,” Aaron shared.

He credits farming with providing him a sense of independence and purpose, allowing him to work for himself while contributing meaningfully to the community.

Farming as a Way of Life

For Aaron, farming is more than a profession—it’s a livelihood.

The income generated from his farm helps support his household and meet daily expenses, while the physical demands of the work help him maintain an active and healthy lifestyle.

His produce is sold throughout the community and supplied to a network of loyal vendors who depend on the quality and consistency of his harvests.

Advice for the Next Generation of Farmers

When asked what advice he would offer aspiring farmers, Aaron spoke candidly about the realities of agriculture.

He emphasized that success in farming requires both physical and mental strength.

According to Aaron, there will be challenges. There will be moments when farmers feel discouraged or tempted to give up. However, perseverance is essential.

His advice is simple yet powerful:

“You have to be mentally strong. Sometimes you may want to quit because of all the challenges that arise, but the rewards are great because you can provide for yourself and your family.”

Aaron firmly believes that discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments—a philosophy that has guided his journey and contributed to his success.

Supporting Agricultural Growth

Whitegate Development Corporation remains committed to supporting farmers like Aaron through strategic land allocation and agricultural development initiatives. With over 1,000 acres of land designated for agricultural use in perpetuity, we continue to create opportunities for farmers to expand production, embrace innovation, and contribute to a more resilient and sustainable agricultural sector.

Stories like Aaron’s remind us that agriculture is not only about growing crops—it is about growing communities, creating opportunities, and building a stronger future for generations to come.

We thank Mr. Aaron Hodge for sharing his journey and for his continued contribution to agriculture in St. Kitts and Nevis.
